Gamutan ’07 Accomplished

No one is so poor that one cannot give.

This line captures the yearlong reach-out activities organized by the Adult Night High School’s (ANHS) Social Concerns Program.  Last February 10, the Social Concerns Program led the 5th Medical-Dental Mission entitled Gamutan ’07 held at Block 36, Addition Hills, Mandaluyong City.

The mission was sponsored by the graduating class from the High School and Non-Formal Education, the Basic Ecclesial Community and the ANHS Faculty Club.

A total of six medical doctors, two dentists and three nurses extended their time and services to the residents of the target community.  Medicines distributed to the patients who came en masse were donated by Unilab, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), LSGH’s Center for Spiritual Development (CSD), InterPhil and from students in the NFE.

Miss Cristina Sarmiento, moderator of the Social Concerns Program, shared that two days before the reach-out activity, she was already planning to cancel or postpone the mission because she did not know where to get the needed medicines.  Fortunately, the donations arrived in time for the medical-dental mission.  She added that she was already desperate for the medicines but was very happy that the donation came in bulk.

The medical-dental mission instituted five years ago serves as the year-end reach-out activity of the ANHS Social Concerns Program.  This is the second year that the community in Block 36 was chosen as recipient of the medical and dental services.

The services given to the community included tooth extraction, medical and dental check-up, blood pressure (BP) check, and distribution of medicines. Based on the assessment done by the Social Concerns Department, this year’s activity was successfully accomplished judging from the number of patients who attended and quality of services extended.

Doctors who participated in the mission included Dr. Ken Villamin, Dr. Alexander Claridad, Dr. Leonila Cabantug, Dr. Delia Archangel and Dr. Brennan Cosio; the two dentists were Dr. Marvin Felix and Dr. Michael Luciano; the nurses were Miss Monena Zafrani, Mrs. Ana Leah Tan and Mrs. Mariefe Patino.

Despite the heat and fatigue experienced in the event, participants and organizers were able to accomplish yet another humble goal of giving and sharing.

Current SC Officers Dominate Election

By Alfonso Reyes – 2A

      Something old, something new!

This year’s Student Council Election result has been dominated by the council’s current officers who run for office.  Five out of the nine positions will be held by current officers from the SC.  These positions include president, secretary, 3rd year, 4th year and 5th year representatives.

Jenifer Mendez of 4B the SC’s current Secretary won over rival in this year’s council election.  The election activities took off during the presentation of candidates in the Promenade last February 5.  It was followed by the campaign of the two parties, Student Movement for Better Lasallian (SMBL) and Progresibong Mag-Aaral.  Both parties also presented their individual and group platforms to the student body in the Miting De Avance last February 8 at the St. Joseph Theater.  Proctoso Vallente of 4B and one of SC’s current student marshal led SMBL party.

SC officers shared that this year’s election had some problems with the refusal of some students to run for office.  But Mendez and Vallente bravely took on the challenge of running for office and convincing other students to join them in their parties.

Mendez shared that she still feels nervous about her new responsibility but added that she will definitely do her best to lead the council.  During the Miting de Avance, she said that her platform is to organize a fund-raising project for students by collecting recyclable materials like plastic bottles which will be sold.  The money will be used as fund for students who are having problems for their daily fare.  After winning, she said that she intends to push through with her plan.

When asked about her other plans, she said that she will assist the students and the moderator in implementing projects of the council.  This year’s other officers include: April Arabelle Mallari, 3A (Vice President), Graziella Cuyos-3C (Secretary), Michael Angelo-4C (Sports Moderator), Wilson Adobas-4B (Spiritual Moderator); Representatives: Jerald Manalo-1B (2nd Year), Rosalie Arca-2C (3rd Year), Morlino Sabado-3B (4th Year) and Jaime Cerillo-4C (5th Year).

The Student Council is led by the ANHS Student Affairs Moderator Mrs. Leila Cayetano

ANHS Joins Kabihasnan Festivities

Food, music and fun that is  what Kabihasnan is made of.

“Sama sama, Tulong tulong, Pagbabago’y Isulong” was the theme of La Salle Green Hills 2007 Kabihasnan Celebration held last February 16 and 17, 2007.

The Kabihasnan is an event celebrated by the whole LSGH Community every two years.  It serves as the school’s foundation day and school fair.

Two-days of fun and celebration were prepared for the young and old who came in throngs for the post-valentine activity.

The Adult Night High School Department shared in the two-day festivities through a food booth called Kusi ng ANHS. The booth was manned by the cooking and HRFS students of the Non-Formal Education (NFE) headed by Miss Judith Desiderio.

Night school students watched the concert organized by the Day High School entitled SchooltureSchock held last February 16, 2007.  Aside from the free concert, students were also treated to some rides, booths and shows located at the fair grounds.

Kabihasnan 2007 marks the preparation of the LSGH’s 50th anniversary in 2009.

Although traffic once again haunted most of the motorists passing along Ortigas, the LSGH community enjoyed another year of food, fun and music.
